It seems to be a very significant patch with around 50-100 changes, if you don't count the more generic lines as multiple changes. It also explains in detail the many fixes, balance adjustments, AI changes, and feature adjustments. So most likely any mods will require this patch. There you will see a note saying that it is now able to be modded. Version 1.05 also has patch notes placed in the revised readme.txt in that folder it is directed to patch into. In my case, it found the correct location easily, but it is as Vincent described. The update seems to be working fine, but I have not played through with it, just booted it up and saw that the game shows as updated to the new version.
